Understanding your Siamese cat’s behavior

In shortThe Siamese talks, and he expects an answer. His meow is not a complaint: it is a bond. The real change in him is silence, or a voice that tightens day after day.

What defines them

An Oriental cat with a slim body and an unforgettable voice, the Siamese is one of the most people-oriented cats: he follows, comments, demands and hates being bored. His attachment is intense and sometimes exclusive. Under-stimulated, he becomes loud, destructive or starts chewing fabric. His body language is very expressive, with a mobile tail and ears, but the voice dominates everything: learn his tones.

What matters when you read them

  • He meows looking at you, loud and varied: conversation. Answer, that is what he wants.
  • A meow that rises, higher, more insistent day after day: frustration or an unmet need.
  • A Siamese silent for a day: the clearest change in the breed. Check his condition.
  • He chews wool or fabric: boredom or stress, common in the breed, not to let settle in.

Three things that help

Answer him. He meows to connect. A word, a look, not silence. Dialog counts as much as play.

Do not leave him alone too much. A second cat, a presence, a lively window. Boredom makes him loud.

Brain games. Food puzzle, trick training, clicker. The Siamese learns fast and enjoys it.

Young, adult, senior

As a kitten he is already chatty and acrobatic: set up heights and a daily play ritual. As an adult his need for contact does not fade. As a senior, watch teeth, kidneys and heart; a change of voice or new night meowing in an older Siamese can signal hyperthyroidism or high blood pressure.

Frequently asked questions

My Siamese meows non-stop. How do I quiet him?

You do not quiet a Siamese, you fill his days. Structured play morning and evening, puzzles, conversation, and not rewarding the meow with food every time. A busy Siamese still talks, but differently.

He only bonds with me and ignores the rest of the family. Why?

Exclusive attachment is common in the breed. Have the others take part in play and meals, without forcing contact. He will widen his circle at his own pace.

My Siamese is cross-eyed. Is that serious?

The squint is linked to the pointed-coat gene and affects many Siamese without bothering them. A new squint in an adult who did not have one, however, should be shown to a vet.
