Understanding your domestic shorthair’s behavior

In shortThe domestic shorthair, or moggy, comes with no manual. He is the most common and most varied cat: you read the individual, not the breed. What comes back often: the evening hunt and the window, which are his rhythm, not agitation.

What defines them

Sturdy, well proportioned, in every color, the domestic shorthair is the direct descendant of farm and village cats. He kept the hunter’s whole repertoire: stalking, the dusk run, patrolling the territory. He cuddles in his own way, often on his terms, and is independent without being distant. His variability is his strength: each one has his own dose of contact, play and solitude, to be discovered rather than assumed.

What matters when you read them

  • He runs and hunts in the evening, then settles: his crepuscular rhythm, not anxiety.
  • He spends hours on the windowsill, tail tip twitching: visual hunting. That is his television.
  • He comes, then leaves: contact at his dose. Not a rejection, he sets the length.
  • A cat who changes his dose, clingier or more distant than usual, is informing you: read the change against himself.

Three things that help

The evening hunt. A wand toy before the bowl. He still has the mouse reflex, and the hunt-eat-groom-sleep sequence settles him.

A window. A sill, a bird, the neighborhood. It is his newspaper, and an occupation without you.

Observe before copying. Height, hunting, cuddles: note what he chooses. That is his own manual.

Young, adult, senior

As a kitten he learns to hunt and to dose his claws: wand games, never hands. As an adult he needs territory, in height and hiding spots, and a routine. As a senior, kidneys, thyroid and teeth dominate, and the first sign is often a change of routine: he sleeps elsewhere, eats differently, meows at night.

Frequently asked questions

My cat is very independent. Does he not love me?

He loves you at his dose. Many house cats show attachment by sleeping in the same room, following you from a distance or presenting their flank. The lap cuddle is only one of the forms.

He brings home mice and birds. How do I stop him?

You do not remove the instinct, you redirect it: wand hunting sessions, a meal after, and outdoor time limited at dawn and dusk, when he hunts most. A bell collar reduces bird catches.

Is a moggy sturdier than a pedigree cat?

Often, yes, thanks to genetic diversity. But he is not invulnerable: kidneys, teeth and excess weight affect all cats. A yearly check-up remains the baseline.
